Day one hundred ninety-nine/365. I see both sides. If my son, a vegan, were to eat eggs, this is exactly what he'd be looking for. Eggs from free-range chickens. Assurance that the birds lived as healthy and happy a life as a captive animal can. After all, information about the way animals are treated as commodities in factory-like environments is shocking.
On the other hand, how closely can we afford to scrutinize what we buy? Should we check each garment to be sure it wasn 't made by underpaid workers in a developing nation? My son will drink only certain brands of coffee out of fairness to workers. How much education do I need in order to shop justly?
Is there a line delineating what is reasonable?

One of the attractions along the Midway at the State Fair. For 50 cents, you can walk into a tent to see the Half Zebra/Half Horse, or the Zebroid. Also on display is the elephant-skinned dog (not pictured.) I Have nothing to justify the following statement but I would expect that this animal unfortunately lives a miserable life..

The James's Flamingo (Phoenicopterus jamesi), also known as the Puna Flamingo, is a South American flamingo, named for Harry Berkeley James. It breeds on the high Andean plateaus of Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. It is related to the Andean Flamingo, and the two are often placed in the genus Phoenicoparrus.
It is a small and delicate flamingo, approximately 3 feet in height. Its plumage is pale pink, with bright carmine streaks around the neck and on the back. When perched a small amount of black can be seen in the wings. There is bright red skin around the eye. The legs are brick-red and the bill is bright yellow with a black tip. Immature birds are greyish.
James's Flamingo is similar to other South American flamingoes, but the Chilean Flamingo is pinker, with a longer bill without yellow, and the Andean Flamingo is larger with more black in the wings and bill, and yellow legs.

Kookoolan Farm Calf

Last week I visited Kookoolan Farm in Yamhill, OR. They produce raw milk from their three Jersey cows as well as free range eggs and meat chickens. They have partnered with other local farmers to slaughter and market a full range of grassfed, humanely raised meat. They pretty much rock.
One thing I found really interesting was Chrissie's comments on her Jerseys being, em, "agressive mothers" :) As a dog person this makes perfect sense. When we breed a strain of animals to do one thing we get a fair amount of "logical conclusion" behavior. For example, labradors have been bred to retrieve and many labs have weird mouthy/eating/carrying things around behavior. Jack russel terriers were bred to chase rats so we see obsessive chasing and visual stimulation behaviors.
Well, apparently when we breed cows to do nothing but be pregnant or nursing we get some "logical conclusions" behaviors around mothering. Chrissie says one of her cows gave birth and the other two were mothering the one calf so aggressively that she had to buy two more calves from other local farmers. This is one of her teddy bear calves. He is 5 days old and he sucked on my thumb. Soooo cute!!

In seed plants, a distinction is whether an individual plant only pollen produced (male), only seeds produced (female), or both ( hybrid ). The majority of flowering plants are hermaphrodites. The female beauty is often marked with the symbol ♀ (see figure above). This symbol represents the stylized hand mirror of the Roman goddess Venus is and is among other things an alchemical symbol for copper.
Female is a noun that refers to individuals female of a species (its opposite is male ). It can be used in humans. In species having beauty by differentiated individuals possess a female gene larger than that of an individual male gene. In this sense, the beauty comes from events such as the shape , the visual aspect , the movement and sound , although it is associated, to a lesser extent, the flavors and smells . In this line and emphasizing the visual appearance, Thomas Aquinas defined beauty as that which pleases the eye.
In ancient Chinese writing a sign meaning "beautiful", but today is combined with two other signs that mean "big" and "sheep". Possibly the largest sheep was representative of beauty. The Mayan culture thought to have structuralism that was beautiful, and to achieve this, the mothers put jars in front of children to grow up with this defect, the concept of beauty vary across cultures.
The characterization of a person as "beautiful", either individually or by community consensus, is often based on a combination of inner beauty , which includes psychological factors such as consistency, elegance, charm, grace , integrity , intelligence , personality and sympathy - and outer beauty , ie physical attractiveness, which includes physical factors, such as youth, health body, sensuality and symmetry.
Commonly external beauty is measured based on the general opinion or consensus of a group of people. An example of this are the beauty pageants , such as Miss Universe . Inner beauty, however, is more difficult to quantify, though beauty pageants often claimed consider it. An important indicator of physical beauty is "averageness". When images of human faces are averaged to form a composite image, it progressively closer and closer to the image "ideal" and is perceived as more attractive.

College students, which Florida State is obviously choc full of, are notorious for our supposed debauchery and party-centric antics—behavior that Olympic athletes, apparently, seem to share with us.
Although summer terms mean that there are fewer students at FSU, the partying is in no way eliminated, even though students are taking classes, just like students do every fall and spring. Indeed, partying often increases in those two semesters with the possible connections to football season in fall and the fairer weather during most of Spring semester. In a fashion similar to that of college students who party on weekends and hit the books during the week, competitors at the Olympic games are now being exposed as their own breed of party animals.
According to The New York Post, a new anonymously authored exposé titled The Secret Olympics has been published in time for the games this summer. It provides never-before-seen insight into the previously hidden insanity that takes place in the Olympic village, where athletes live during the games. Written by a former British competitor, The Secret Olympics delves into the mystery surrounding the activities of the participants when they are not competing.
The anonymous author writes, “Organizers supplied 70,000 condoms to athletes at the 2000 summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The stockpile ran out in a week.” However, quotes from athletes indicate that this supposed partying evidence is merely a prank done on an enormous scale.
“It’s tradition—taking so many that they have to replace them,” says Todd Lodwick, two-time gold medalist and five-time Olympic Nordic combined athlete. “It’s a myth.” Whether prank or actual party evidence, the consumption of 70,000 condoms in one week is definitely something that college students find funny as a prank, and impressive as sexual truth.
Another Olympic athlete, who spoke with The Post on condition of anonymity, says “When I’m there, I’m in two different gears. I’m so focused that I see nothing else, or I’m partying my butt off.” Her quote accurately echoes the sentiment behind the phrase work hard, play harder, which is definitely something college students, and students at FSU, excel at.
Lodwick also went on to admit that Olympians do have more sex than usual when they are at the Olympics. However, Lodwick and the anonymous female athlete admit that there is a divide in the Village: those who are considered the elite of the elite and abstain from drugs, alcohol or sex while at the Olympics, and those who do not. Then again, when condoms, and all the other amenities in the Village, are free for the athletes, it would be hard for anyone to resist the urge to party and have sex.
The ultimate commonality between the demigod-like Olympians and university students is the universal understanding of the need for discretion. Just like students understand that it is a bad idea to blatantly have evidence, like photos, laying around after a weekend of partying, whether you are the legal age or not, Olympians follow a similar code. After all, writes the anonymous author of The Secret Olympics, “What happens in the village, stays in the village.”
