I think the Varanid lizards or goannas or monitors (whatever you prefer) are very intelligent. I oberserved them a few days and I feel the intelligence, furthermore the varanids are very fast. At this time I thought that the sweet lizards are herbivore but today I know that is wrong: The amazing lizards are carnivore. Ooops, I think I got on the goannas nerves and was very closed to them. But it does not matter: I want to take a picture. Photographed in Sri Lanka.
I like the film "Jurassic Park" and saw all the "Jurassic-Park"-films 15 times or so and everytime if I saw a varanid I remembered.

In memory:

American author, film producer, film director, medical doctor, and television producer best known for his science fiction and techno-thriller novels, films, and television programs. His books have sold over 150 million copies worldwide. "Jurassic Park", "The Lost World", ER (Emergency Room), "State of Fear" ......
He is staying alive in his stories.

Aufgenommen in Sri Lanka.

Gracie is my new foster dog. She is an 8 month old Chihuahua who is suffering from Demodectic mange, a non-contagious form of mange which causes scabby bald patches all over her body. Grace was rescued from the Baldwin Park Shelter. She was obviously a victim of neglect. The first 8 months of her life were not so good and we will try to make the next few months much better.

Orangotango
photo of animals

The orangutan (whose name comes from two words in the Malay language, which together mean "person of the forest") is a genus of only two species of Asian Great primates. Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans are only found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were considered a kind. However, since 1996, they were divided into two species: the orangutan-of-borneo (P. pygmaeus) and Sumatran orangutan-(P. abelii). Furthermore, the kind-of-orangutan borneo is divided into three subspecies. Orangutans are also the only surviving species of the subfamily Ponginae, which also included several other species such as gigantopithecus, the largest primate known. Both species have had their genomes sequenced and appear to have diverged about 400,000 years ago. Orangutans diverged from the rest of the great apes is approximately 15.7000000 to 19.3000000 years ago.
Orangutans are the most arboreal primates and spend most of their time in trees. Your hair is typically reddish brown, unlike the fur of chimpanzees and gorillas. Males and females differ in size and appearance. Are between 1.10 and 1.40 m tall and weighs between 35 and 100 kg, while adult males generally weigh 200 kg, which makes it the third largest species of primate in the world, surpassed only by the gorilla and man- with whom he shares about 97% of genes. Orangutans are territorial animals, marking territory for the male gives a resounding cry that warns others not to orangutans entering their territory. They are more solitary species of great apes, with sociable ties that only occur mainly between mothers and their children independents who stay together during the first two years. Consequently adult males seeking females only once a year, during the dry season and mate frontalmente.Uma sexual remarkable feature is the growth of "tabs" on the sides of the forehead and neck of mature males, which gives them an aspect quite peculiar.
The main threats to populations of wild orangutans include hunting, habitat destruction and illegal trade of animals for pet use. According to scientists, remain little more than 100,000 orangutans in the world, [5] where the fast growing pace of devastation allows to forecast the extinction of the species occur in a few decades.
Females live in groups, but apparently without the same hierarchy found in other species of apes and learn how to care for puppies older females. Puppies are born after nine months of pregnancy, becoming cling to the long coasts of the mother. In the wild, the reproductive rate is low, which further contributes to the risk of extinction. The puppies are on average 8 years with the mother until they become independent, which makes mothers orangutans, the primates who care for their children more time (not counting humans.
Orangutans live on average 35 years to 40 years in the wild and 50 years in captivity.

NYC - Brooklyn - Prospect Park Zoo: Animals in Our Lives - Koi

koiKoi (鯉), or more specifically nishikigoi (錦鯉), are ornamental domesticated varieties of the common carp Cyprinus carpio. They are believed to have originated from Eastern Asia, Aral, Black and Caspian Seas. Earliest records of Koi have been found in China and have been widely spread in Japan. The ornamental cultivation of carp flourished under the Chinese Qing Dynasty and Japanese Yayoi Period. They are very closely related to goldfish and, in fact, the style of breeding and ornamentation has become very similar, probably through the efforts of Japanese breeders to emulate goldfish. Koi and tattoos of koi are traditionally considered lucky.

The word "koi" comes from Japanese. The original Japanese word koi simply means "carp," including both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. A homonym of koi means 'love, affection' and koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan.

The Prospect Park Zoo, Brooklyn's only Zoo, is home to nearly 400 animals of more than 80 species. First established as a small menagerie in Prospect Park in the late 1800's, this collection of animals became the more formal Prospect Park Zoo on Flatbush Avenue that opened to the public on July 3, 1935. A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the Zoo was part of a massive city-wide park improvement program initiated and executed by former Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. Closed in 1988 for a five year, million dollar renovation program, the zoo was completely replaced save for the exteriors of the 1930's-era buildings. Rededicated on October 5, 1993, it joined Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) world-renowned network of wildlife parks in New York City.

I was taking some fun photos of Menari, a Sumatran orangutan. In this shot she is zoning in on her dad. A split second after I took this she leaped on top of her sleeping dad's head and started attacking him playfully. He was not amused!! If this expression doesn't show intelligence and premeditation I don't know what does. Regardless of species, kids are all the same HA HA

This little darling is a female juvenile orangutan named Menari. She was born at Audobon Zoo in 2009. She is an Sumatran orangutan, a species that is endangered in its Indonesian homeland.

Orangutans are the only exclusively Asian genus of extant great ape. The largest living arboreal animals, they have proportionally longer arms than the other, more terrestrial, great apes. They are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. Their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes.

Daily Disney - Tree of Life
photo of animals
This one was taken on my way out of the park. For some reason I always have a tough time shooting this tree. This one was no exception. This was a quick - turn around, compose, snap and get out of the way shot - I accidentally still had the camera set on ISO1600, which meant I had some noise to combat. Also, it was around 1:00 in the afternoon, which always makes it tough without a lens hood or polarizer. With the RAW file though, I was able to do some pretty decent post-process work to save this. With not a lot of dynamic light to work with, I don't even know how much a multi-exposure HDR would have worked here... I do like the POV though, which is from the main entrance path about as far as you can go with still being able to see the tree. I composed high on purpose as there were loads of people coming up the hill my way on the path. If there were no people it would have been cool to include a little more of the foreground in the picture. Maybe this would make a cool nighttime long exposure.

Photos of Wal-Mart ANIMAL CRUELTY
photo of animals
Dear Sir,

I have attached for you photos I took at a local Wal-Mart of how they sell their Betta fish. Please excuse the clarity but anyone can walk into a WM and take better photos, with a better camera. Also, I have attached photos of gutted whales, endangered whales, killed by a company that Wal-Mart owns most of the shares in.
I was horrified one day when I noticed the way my local Howell, NJ Wal-Mart keeps Betta Fighting Fish in TINY containers, the size that one might get potato salad in at a deli. Although it is true that male Betta Fish need to be kept separate from other MALE BETTAS, they certainly should not be kept in such small containers. I did research on this topic, even learning that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has a campaign against Wal-Mart for this reason. One can search the PETA web site to learn more about it. I realized that this is going on in just about EVERY Wal-Mart Store around the country.

According to the PETA web site, "Gaddy Bergmann of the Department of Biology at the University of South Florida states, "Even small fish . require at least 10 gallons for good water quality and normal activity... small volumes of water are less stable than larger ones and may physiologically challenge their occupants".

I contacted their corporate offices, as well as the managers of the Howell, NJ store, who have refused to change this practice, trying to impress upon me their "knowledge" (but really a lack therof) that these fish can survive in small containers. Included is a photo I took at the Wal-Mart in Howell NJ. You can see that they barely give the fish enough water to cover their backs. This is cruel. I ask everyone out there who disagrees with this practice to boycott at least their fish department, and contact their local store managers and corporate offices at H. Lee Scott Jr., CEO & President, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., 702 S.W. Eighth St., Bentonville, AR 72716-8611, Tel.: 800-WAL-MART, until Wal-Mart stops this cruel practice.

I know some people might think, they are only fish, but they are living, breathing, beings, and if we are going to fish them out of the ocean and put them in a little bowl, cant we at least make the container larger than the size of a potato salad container?

Thank you

Bonnie Monaghan

Jackson, NJ

He was found at the Albertson's parking lot at highway 115 (South Neveda Ave) and Cheyenne Mountain Blvd at around 14:00 today in Colorado Springs, CO. It appears that he may have been dumped there intentionally, for a van was seen letting the dog out and taking off. The poor scared dog chased the van for a distance, scared of being left alone.

He would not leave the area where he was abandoned. He appears to be a very well kept dog with excellant manners. He was so terrified that it took about six hours to capture him.

If you have lost a dog, or maybe it was stolen from you by some bad people that decided they did not want him for he was way too gentle, please contact me via email, or post here. Rest assured, he is safe.

Since so many thugs use their mindless women to pretend the dog is theirs, I will be asking for pictures of the dog, and other verification. This is why I have not listed everything about the dog here. I posted him on Craig's List, and out of the beaucoup emails I got, once I asked for pictures, I only heard back from two people. Why? Apparently, this is how dog fighters find animals to use as bait, or to train for dog fighting. Thus, the precautions I will be using.

This boy will also be needing a home, should no one come forward to claim him. Please share his picture and story if you would. Thank you.

Direct eye contact is awesome but sometimes feels pretty intimidating too. This was shot during one of our training tours. It was after hours, a time when the animals are not accustomed to having any people around; maybe that's why we got the warning growl you see here. I was lucky enough to catch my shot and make eye/camera contact as the cat scanned along the line of people in our class. This look wasn't directed just at me only, and after the growl, we were promptly ignored.

Picasso or Panda? Budding Animal Artists Emerge at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo

Sans berets, smocks or palettes, the animals at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are getting their paws dirty with non-toxic, water-based paint and creating one-of-a-kind works of art. Painting is one among many activities that fall under Animal Enrichment—a program that provides physically and mentally stimulating activities and environments for the Zoo’s residents. The animals have the opportunity not only to choose how to behave, but also to use their natural abilities and behaviors in new and exciting ways.

Enrichment is an integral part of the daily care of the species in the Zoo’s collection. Keepers and curators carefully study animal behavior and determine what kinds of enrichment are appropriate for each species and, occasionally, individual animals. Keepers have a number of novel options for enrichment. They may alter an exhibit; train an animal; introduce new smells, sounds, foods, and objects; or enlist an animal in a research project, such as a study about foraging skills or cognitive research. Adding a variety of engaging activities helps keepers ensure the Zoo’s animals have a high quality of life.

Though the subjects of the animals’ paintings remain mysterious, the ways visitors can support the Zoo’s enrichment program are as clear as a starry, starry night. Drop off any size canvas, art paper, paint brush or non-toxic, water-based paint at the Visitor Center for the animal care staff to distribute. Animal keepers are collecting gifts for the animals this holiday season. Browse the list of needed items on the Enrichment Giving Tree section of the Zoo’s website or the Enrichment page of the Zoo’s online store.

Art produced by many of the Zoo’s mammal and bird residents will be available for purchase at the National Capital chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) Art Show, which will take place spring 2012.

Bergeron's Exotic Animal Sanctuary is OPEN for another year! (Single RAW capture HDR)

Jenn and I took a drive out to Bergeron's Exotic Animal Sanctuary today on a whim after I received a message on Facebook this morning saying it was open for the year.

This is one of many Cougars at the Sanctuary, basking in the sunlight right next to the fence. Quite literally 4 feet away from us and our cameras! Bergeron's is a unique opportunity to be much closer to the animals than Zoos allow.

I completely encourage anyone in the area, or even not from the area to head out to Bergeron's and have a look around, the animals are amazing and beautiful, and the Sanctuary could always use the paid admissions to keep it running. for an adult to enter, much less than you'd pay to go to the Zoo!

All of the Bergeron's photos I post up today and over the next couple of days are dedicated to Joe Bergeron who passed away this holiday season. It was his and his wife's vision that created the sanctuary. He will be truly missed.

From Wikipedia:
The Cougar (Puma concolor) is a mammal of the Felidae family, native to the Americas. This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, extending from Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in every major American habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the American continents after the jaguar, and the fourth heaviest in the world, along with the leopard, after the tiger, lion, and jaguar, although it is most closely related to smaller felines.

A capable stalk-and-ambush predator, the cougar pursues a wide variety of prey. Primary food sources include ungulates such as deer, elk, and bighorn sheep, as well as domestic cattle, horses, and sheep, particularly in the northern part of its range, but it also hunts species as small as insects and rodents. Moreover, it prefers habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking, but it can live in open areas. The cougar is territorial and persists at low population densities. Individual territory sizes depend on terrain, vegetation, and abundance of prey. While it is a large predator, it is not always the dominant species in its range, as when it competes for prey with other predators such as the jaguar, Gray Wolf, American Black Bear, and the Grizzly Bear. It is a reclusive cat and usually avoids people. Attacks on humans remain rare, despite a recent increase in frequency.

Fisher (Martes pennanti)

It is a medium-size mammal native to North America. It is a member of the mustelid family, commonly referred to as the weasel family. The fisher is closely related to but larger than the American Marten (Martes americana). The fisher is a forest-dwelling creature whose range covers much of the boreal forest in Canada to the northern fringes of the United States. Names derived from aboriginal languages include pekan, pequam, and wejack. It is also sometimes referred to as a fisher cat, though it is not a feline. Fishers are omnivorous and feed on a wide variety of small animals and occasionally fruits and mushrooms. They show a preference for the snowshoe hare and are one of the few predators able to hunt porcupine. Despite their name, fishers seldom eat fish. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_%28animal%29
