Nesting

Nesting sounds like a great way to spend a cold, wet, and windy day. But a Super Bowl Party is calling and I'll have to venture out eventually. White-Necked Cormorant seen at the WIld Animal Park in Escondido, CA.

We're back in South Carolina, and thank God for safe travel, but we surely miss Mr. Cheerful Perpetual Motion, here seen feeding a deer at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park.

18 August 2004 Thunderhead

Panorama from three separate digital images. This massive thunderhead with anvil was photographed on 18 August 2004 at the Wild Animal Park in San Diego, CA. I'm looking forward to photographing some more thunderheads this August. Yesterday there were some amazingly impressive ones visible from Mira Mesa.

Mom, Dad and TWO of the cubs. (One is nursing from the crevice.)
They were dealing with 8 lion cubs at one time over at the WAP, so they shaved little spots in different areas so they could tell them apart.

The Saddest Eyes

Another shot from the Wild Animal Park. We stopped by the Gorilla section and i know that the Zoo and Wild Animal Park do a great job of care taking certain species to ensure their survival but they always look so, so sad. They really do belong in a jungle on a mountain top. But then again, people just hunt and kill them there.
Close Encounters of the Furred Kind

While walking around the San Diego Wild Animal Park we had a close encounter with a wild deer that had gotten into the grounds and was just wondering around the park eating the plants. I hope it kept clear of the lions, tigers and cheetahs :)
Shot at the San Diego Wild Animal Park during our recent SoCal holiday.
I typically upload in small sets - don't just look at the latest one in my photostream as you might be missing something you'll like more.... and your comments are ALWAYS welcome :)

Thirst
In Whipsnade Wild Animal Park they've got free roaming Maras. I was quietly sitting on the grass, trying to get a good picture of a resting one, when it suddenly stand up and went away looking in my direction. But I hadn't done anything to disturb it.
I turned around and saw three elephants passing me very closely. Two keepers were taking them on a walk. They got a little drink at the tap and grazed afterwards on the same grass I was sitting on. A bit later one elephant moved to the tap again and opened it to get some more water.
(Of course I was surprised being so close to such big animals, but I stayed calm and handled the whole situation like a professional photographer.)

The cheetahs at the Wild Animal Park can be seen now from the "Journey Into Africa" tram. A fourth sister was moved to another zoo as she was nervous and uncomfortable in this setting. She is reportedly much happier on her own now.

Tiger at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado - Most of the tigers at the Sanctuary were bought as cubs by people who then were unable to care for adults and left them in horrific conditions. Apparently, it's fairly easy to buy tiger cubs for <,000 at roadside "zoos"

We were lucky enough to catch the cheetah feeding at San Diego Wild Animal Park. This photograph was actually taken by Caitlin as I talked to the Canon EOS 20D photographer to my left about lens choice. He was secretly teasing me about my use of a flash for the cats, but Caitlin got just the right amount of light in the eyes with this shot. Other photographs didn’t turn out so well because of the tapetum, which I ironically blogged about last month.
The day is actually miserable, but nothing nik’s “sunshine” filter can’t fix.

Hang in there, buddy (Animal Kingdom - Malayan Flying Fox bat)
One of my favorite parts of Animal Kingdom and the trails, are the huge bats. I mean, you are IN the room with them, there are no dividers between these huge things and you. Granted, from what I hear they rarely if ever fly into that little porch area but still.
I can never stop taking photos of these guys while I am there This trip was no exception. I had about 3/4 shots that I kept, and 3 of them are very similar...but different enough to post.
This one I liked how you see his entire silhouette, as well as his real nose. That, and the color.
