(Best viewed with audio off) This Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is foraging for sunflower seeds under a bird feeder in 2 feet of snow covered by an ice crust. Note how the squirrel backs out of the hole before eating each seed, leaving a packed down area to his rear and a pile of discarded seed hulls in front. Also note that the diameter of the hole is quite a bit larger than that of the squirrel because it has been widened by the repeated trips in and out of the hole. On this crusted surface, the squirrel leaves no tracks to identify the holes’s creator. However, it is likely that he is leaving hairs behind which could be found with a hand lens, especially at the edge of the crust.
