I've had a deep love and fascination with birds ever since I owned a Conure years ago; yet the Lek (Rupicola Peruviana) is one of the most interesting birds I've ever seen. Its disc-like orange crest basically covers its bill; I wanted instead to focus on its stare and the detail of the bird's colours. My lens was on its macro setting and I was basically less than a foot away from it when I shot this piece, which goes to show that these birds are raised to be hand fed and are docile to humans. This image was photographed at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Ivan the Terrible, the world's goofiest giraffe, at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

My sweet Ivan has been supplanted! Since Ivan is getting on in age, and his DNA is SO well represented already in the captive giraffe population (you GO, studly!), the WAP has brought in a new TALLER (18' opposed to Ivan's 17.5') male giraffe and has let him loose with the ladies. Ivan is stuck in a much smaller area now with only a few other giraffes to keep him company. You must pay $ $ to ride "Journey Into Africa" to see him.

The Great White

This was taken at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which was known to local residents, in less marketing driven times, as the Wild Animal Park. When I think "Great White", a pelican is not what comes to mind. I can't recall seeing pictures of pelicans flying off with seals in their pouches, or surfers driven from the water by reports of pelican sightings. Nevertheless, a sign identified this bird as a Great White Pelican. Still, seeing this buffed out bird raising it's powerful wings like this, and I start to wonder if the rumors of rampant steroid use among pelicans are true . That would explain the tattoos and piercings. This might make the cover of Pelican Life Magazine. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/4307911676/#/photos/942...

Panorama from three separate digital images. This massive thunderhead with anvil was photographed on 18 August 2004 at the Wild Animal Park in San Diego, CA. I'm looking forward to photographing some more thunderheads this August. Yesterday there were some amazingly impressive ones visible from Mira Mesa.

They were dealing with 8 lion cubs at one time over at the WAP, so they shaved little spots in different areas so they could tell them apart.

Another shot from the Wild Animal Park. We stopped by the Gorilla section and i know that the Zoo and Wild Animal Park do a great job of care taking certain species to ensure their survival but they always look so, so sad. They really do belong in a jungle on a mountain top. But then again, people just hunt and kill them there.

Close Encounters of the Furred Kind

While walking around the San Diego Wild Animal Park we had a close encounter with a wild deer that had gotten into the grounds and was just wondering around the park eating the plants. I hope it kept clear of the lions, tigers and cheetahs :)

Thirst

In Whipsnade Wild Animal Park they've got free roaming Maras. I was quietly sitting on the grass, trying to get a good picture of a resting one, when it suddenly stand up and went away looking in my direction. But I hadn't done anything to disturb it.

I turned around and saw three elephants passing me very closely. Two keepers were taking them on a walk. They got a little drink at the tap and grazed afterwards on the same grass I was sitting on. A bit later one elephant moved to the tap again and opened it to get some more water.

(Of course I was surprised being so close to such big animals, but I stayed calm and handled the whole situation like a professional photographer.)

I went over to the WAP on April 24 just to try to get a better picture of the 2 Red River Hogs born the morning of April 12. It was pretty difficult; either they were running around the yard at full tilt or were lying at mom's side having lunch.
